The Good Girl (2002)

Hi everybody i thought I might post about a surprisingly good late night movie I recently saw, "the good girl", turns out Jennifer Aniston can be more than just Rachael from friends. The focus of the story is the monotony of her life, married to an underachieving pot smoking husband, Justine (Aniston) works at the local supermarket (seen as the epitome of life crushing monotony) Miguel"Chuck&Buck"Arteta directs this fascinating look at life as a nothing. Justine suffers the exact same mind numbing decisions every day and feels that she is destined for so much more, when suddenly one mr Jake Gyllenhaal comes into her life, a fellow retail rodeo worker Thomas "holden" Worther. Holden shows her lifes possibilities in terms of passion and poetry whilst ultimately leading Justine on a pathj of destruction. Aniston does extremely well and this is probably a one of those rare screen moments where an actor is able to show the best of their abilities in what is somewhat a lacklustre career such as Stephen Baldwin in the Usual suspects. Anyway this is a very understated movie and I have to say one of my favourite dramatic pieces, I love the fact that the comedy always comes in at the right time without ruining the dramatic feel of the movie. Watch out for the excellent scene in the movie where Justine comes to a v in the road, one leads to the retail rodeo and back to her sameish life whilst the other leads to a hotel where holden waits for her, it is an amazingly effective metaphor for the crossroads she faces in her life. I won't telll you what she picks but whatever happens i think both outcomes would be surprising.
