Sweeney Todd: the Demon Barber of Fleet Street

March 10th 2008 10:33
Another collaboration of Johnny Depp and Tim Burton, showcasing their rather 'different' style of movie as always, and this time it is a big-screen adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s award-winning musical thriller “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.”

First of all, the biggest achievement I'd have to say is Johnny Depp can sing! I was unsure about this whole musicality thearetical thing as I haven't seen him in such film. There was a different level of acting involve to be able to pull up a character quite well in a musical thriller, and I reckon Johnny Depp had done a good job in it.

The storyline, as what could be predicted from the title, is basically about a man whom was unjustly sent to prison and separated from his wife and daughter. He vows for revenge, to take justice into his own hand. Hence after his release from prison, he reopens his barber shop and becomes the Demon Barber of Fleet Street who 'shaved the faces of gentlemen who never thereafter were heard of again'. Then there was Mrs Lovett, played fairly well by Helena Bonham Carter, she is Sweeney’s amorous accomplice, who creates diabolical meat pies. Another interesting appearance I'd have to say is Sacha Baron Cohen, playing his role as a rival barber, the flamboyant Signor Adolfo Pirelli.

The overall story was quite interesting, and dark, mysterious, and you will realise the usage of color in the whole film is restricted to dark tone of colors (grey, black, white and occasianally dark red for blood).
I enjoyed the pictures, and the conversations although there are some parts that I felt were too overly done by too much singing (but I reckon they just want to stay true to the idea of musical thriller, can't argue with that then..). The ending was quite good, I didn't expect that. Johnny depp's acting, in my opinion, was quite good, very diferent to what he had done in the past.

I'd give it 7 out of 10 for being different, original, and mysteriously sadistic, however whether it's my favourite Johnny Depp's film? I can be sure, No. I still prefer him playing a non-musical film.

I had no idea that Sacha Baron Cohen was in this one -- that guy is really getting around
