SUPERMAN RETURNS
July 26th 2006 00:58
Okey Dokes, I would just like to start this post by saying I haver been in eager anticipation of this movie for two years and I am a huge fan of the blue and red man, but to be quite honest with you, this movie was a brutal let down, really. I loved the original movies (not number three, lets pretend that was never made) and Cristopher Reeve brought such fun and power to the role. I would prefer to think of a Superman movie as a lovely bit of escapism where we get to see baddies beaten up.....bad news awaits those of you of similar thinking. Newcomer Brandon Routh is extremely likeable as the caped crusader and Kate Bosworth is lovely as Lois Lane and shows that she does have the talent to hold up a blockbuster, however I tend to think the script was, although quite well developed in many parts, it let itself lag heavily in others and the audience was left longing for a damsel in distress to get saved. I don't want to focus entirely on the film as a disappointment because I would hate to think that my great expectations were what made it such a let down. Bryan Singer is a masterful director at times and then at others he seems to forget what is going on as we are left wanting something to sink our teeth into, but the beginning scenes with supermans landing back on earth and the plane rescue are very exciting, the ending is hard to fault as Superman makes a triumphant Return to power lifting an entire island out of the sea, he then falls to earth, but the best scenes in the movie are those of Superman getting help from the people, much like Spiderman two, it shows how much the people truly care for him, yet they also feel completely powerless when they realise they cant operate on him because of his invulnerability, a touching and tense scene that lets the script really shine. The movie is quite beautiful at times and shows the power that Singer wields in his mighty camera

A few months ago I rented out the original, and I think this is the best, better than that one - though I do miss Reeves.
